The Gaelic Names of Beasts collects together recorded names for mammals, birds, fishes, insects and reptiles in Irish, Scots Gaelic and Manx from a variety of sources including oral collections, early manuscripts and folklore. It was first published in 1905 by Alexander Robert Forbes (1849-1924). Forbes was born on Skye, off Scotland’s west coast and studied law in Edinburgh University before becoming Deputy Keeper of the Minute Book of the Court of Sessions in Edinburgh. A noted Celtic scholar, he was an authority on place-names.
