John Cameron (1831-1901) first published his The Gaelic Names of Plants in 1883 and included the scientific names as well as information about folklore and traditional uses of the plants. Born in Lawers on the shore of Loch Tay in Scotland, Cameron moved to Sunderland in England in 1870 where he was to spend most of his life, mainly as headmaster of a private school. A second edition of The Gaelic Names of Plants published in 1900 gained greater public recognition, particularly among the Scottish press.
